Coordinating Minister Mahfud MD Affirms No Military Operations in Papua

The weapons approach is only used when the apparatus must act decisively to ensure public safety and enforce the law.

Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs (Menko Polhukam) Mahfud MD stated that the government did not conduct military operations in Papua in response to armed criminal groups (KKB).

Mahfud said the weapons approach was only used when the apparatus had to act decisively to ensure public safety and enforce the law.

"There is no military operation there, there is no use of a weapons approach unless decisive action is taken to ensure public safety and law enforcement," Mahfud said in a media briefing in the Kuningan area, Jakarta, Thursday (21/7/2022).

Mahfud emphasized that in handling the conflict in Papua the government was not hostile to the people and culture of Papua. Mahfud said the KKB was not a representation of the Papuan people.

Mahfud said the government also uses a welfare approach, as well as territorial operations by the TNI and Polri according to the limits set by law in dealing with KKB in Papua.

The government also conducted a dialogue with the Papuan people which resulted in a number of affirmative policies such as a special autonomy fund, to the provision that regional heads in Papua must be native Papuans.

"Policies that are affirmative in nature are privileging treatment to achieve goals, equality and togetherness," said the former chairman of the Constitutional Court. It is known that an attack was carried out by KKB in Nduga, Papua, Saturday (16/7/2022). (antara)
