Jokowi Asks to Increase Booster Vaccinations to Prevent Increase in Covid-19 Cases

It has also been proven that the vigilance and caution taken by the government has not reduced economic activity.

Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin said the government was preparing to anticipate wider transmission after the discovery of the BA.4 and BA.5 variants of Covid-19, which was followed by an increase in cases.

"Mr. President also gave directions to us that we better be vigilant. We'd better be careful because our vigilance, our conservativeness, our caution has shown that the conditions for handling the pandemic in Indonesia are relatively good compared to other countries in the world. the world," said Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin in a press statement after a limited meeting at the Presidential Office, Jakarta, Monday (13/6).

It has also been proven that the vigilance and caution taken by the government has not reduced economic activity. Even the current economic activity has almost returned to normal. Therefore, in his directive, President Jokowi also requested that booster vaccinations be increased.

"Because now it's June-July, all countries are ready for the next wave," said the Minister of Health.

Based on observations from the Ministry of Health, the peak of waves BA.4 and BA.5 will be reached one month after the discovery of the first case. Thus, it is predicted that the peak of cases from this wave will occur in the second or third week of July 2022.

According to the Minister of Health, if people are ready to face a new wave by increasing their booster vaccination coverage, it is estimated that the peak of the wave of cases will not be high.

"And coupled with this booster, people's immune resistance will last another six months, until February-March next year," he added.

Based on observations from the Ministry of Health in South Africa where this variant was first identified, the peak of transmission of the BA.4 and BA.5 variants is predicted to occur in about a third of the peak of Delta and Omicron. Meanwhile, hospitalization cases also account for one-third of Delta and Omicron hospitalization cases.

Meanwhile, the case of death is predicted to be around one-tenth of the death cases of the two previous variants. The Minister of Health also emphasized that although the BA.4 and BA.5 variants also led to an increase in cases in several countries in the world, the peak increase in cases and hospitalizations and deaths was much lower than during the peak of the Omicron.
