The Minister of Health considers that it is necessary to encourage regulations so that the use of domestic products in the health sector continues to be improved.
Minister of Health (Menkes) Budi Gunadi Sadikin said Indonesia is targeting 60 percent of medical devices (alkes) using local components.
"Now there are still some components from abroad, that's okay. But we can't do this for too long. We want about 50-60% of medical devices and medicines from upstream to downstream to be developed and produced domestically, " said the Minister of Health, Monday, August 29, 2022.
The Minister of Health considers that it is necessary to encourage regulations so that the use of domestic products in the health sector continues to be improved.
The Minister of Health noted that imported medical equipment transactions reached 88 percent in 2019-2020. Meanwhile, for local products only around 12 percent of the total 496 types of medical devices. In fact, 152 items of medical equipment can still be produced domestically.
The low use of local product medical devices is thought to be due to technological limitations and the implementation of regulations for the use of domestic products.
"The government has responded to the high level of dependence by launching a health transformation that focuses on six pillars," he said.
The pharmaceutical and medical device sector is included in the third pillar, namely the transformation of health system resilience. One of the focuses is encouraging the development of domestically produced medical devices to reduce dependence on imported health products.
The Minister of Health said that Indonesia is slowly being able to produce medical devices to meet national needs. Although only able to produce low-tech medical devices, gradually the domestic health industry can produce more sophisticated medical devices.
